Farewell. Writing Update. More Happy than Not.

A post in three parts. What is the cause to this instability of Romi's irregularly but reliably scheduled programming? I'm going away. And I wanted to leave the blog with a big enough post for two weeks. Come back and read a little each day (it's not going to be that long)!

So. My farewell.
Goodbye. Imagine me with a pile of about 20 books staring at a colder version of this view-

I'll be gone for two weeks, internet free except for the fact I'm taking my laptop. Which brings us on to-

A Writing Update.
I don't do them often, do I? Which is amusing, if you take note of my blog title. But I'm doing one now!
I've just finished doing a read through and edit on a novel, and I'm particularly estatic at this stage because I managed to get it from 69K to 80K which is a dream for this story. It's something I'm incredibly passionate about and although I don't particularly enjoy talking about my work (I'm a secretive type, you know) I will give you five facts about it:

  1. I wrote it during NaNo in 2013.
  2. It takes a satirical view of the fairytale.
  3. In it I investigate the Hero-Villain discussion.
  4. There's a fiesty princess.
  5. And I added a very bad swear word at two in the morning and officially decided it isn't ever going to be classified MG.
And I'm proud of it. I'm proud of myself. And I'm so incredibly excited for the future of this novel.
The reason I'm taking my laptop to this power-free retreat for two weeks, when I was the one who solidly said we would be taking no electronics (I call the shots- are you even surprised?) is because I heard of a little event called Pitch to Publication, and I'm entering this novel into it.
And it just happens to be going whilst I'll be away.
So here we are! Depending on how PtP goes I'll be starting the agent querying process in the next month or two. Which is as terrifying as ever.

More Happy than Not.
And now I'll leave you with a tag! This is an excellent one because it is all about happiness and positivity and I'm in love with it, even if I'm only positive myself around fifty percent of the time. The glorious Chiara of Books for a Delicate Eternity tagged me- thank you, lovely! It was created by the epic Shelumiel.
Let's get listing, shall we?
I am more happy than not when I-

feel hopeful.
believe in myself.
am writing, editing, drafting or rereading my work.
am reading.
am jogging
have a sleeping puppy on my lap
get to read for at least a half hour
talk to my friends (whether it be in person, via skype, email or in the comments)
get a new (or old) book
meet new glorious people through our blogs
listen to Conchita
watch Eurovision (I have a handful of passions and that is one)
wear winged eyeliner
play monopoly or watch a movie with a friend who doesn't live in the same country as me
find home through a book (See: Fairyland)
think about all I could be. all I might be. all I want to be.
decide exactly how long until I get my next dog (7 years. It'll be a greyhound. Then I'm going for a wolfhound. And obviously my black cat'll be in there somewhere.)
watch a really spectacular film
feel like I am intrinsically understood
have one of those conversations where you get out all thw words you need to and you understand and are understood
tidy
organise
clean
look at my collection of books
meet a new character born of my imagination (and... occasionally when I throw them into a really amusing, deadly or emotionally turbulent plot twist)
cook
can investigate a passion
am alone
am with people I love
arrange flowers
pelt through rain

This truly is a glorious tag. My motto is if you're inclined, do it, but also if you're Cayce, Aylee, Joy or Kelly.
And I'll see you in two weeks. Watch Instagram for a picture of the books I'll be taking!

  1. So nice to get away once in a while. I still get weirded out whenever I read someone from Australia say it's cold when it's super hot where I am. Lol. Anyway, I hope you'll have pictures when you get back, Romi. I can't wait to read your finished novel!

Thanks for the tag, and have fun!!!

    1. It certainly is, and I haven't been away in quite a while. It'll be nice to shed off all the annoyances of day to day life and just be in a really quiet sphere for a while.
Haha, I guess I'm really used to it after having penpals for years! It's an amusing thought, though, that I'll need about twenty blankets and you'll probably need nothing of the sort! Unless your cabin is freezing, that is.
Okay. Since you asked, I'll post pictures when I get back!
      xx

  2. Thank you, Romi, for doing the Tag AND linking back to me! Fewer things in life is better than being understood and/or getting your thoughts across, in a way that is true to you. Also, plugging off for a while. I wish you luck in your WIP! Have an awesome time!

    1. Aw, not a problem Shelumiel! It was inspiring and made me smile, to think of all these things that make me glad. I had to link back to you when I found out who made it. It's a really beautiful idea.
Oh, I can agree with that. It's such an... amazing feeling. Or even just being supported, knowing the other person doesn't really agree but they're with you anyway. That's truly one of the best things.
Thank you so much! I'm incredibly excited to see how everything goes.
      And terrified.
      xx

  3. Oh my gosh, I am SO excited for you re: book that you'll be pitching!! I knew that you had written something, but I didn't know what it was about and that you had completed it with so may words, and now you'll be pitching it! Ooh good luck, Romi!

Also, what a lovely lovely tag. I would say I'm positive only about 50% of the time as well - sometimes less depending on what stresses I have. Currently my ferrets are making me the happiest, even though they occasionally poop on the floor - they make me smile and laugh at their antics every day! I am also happy for the books I have been reading and the books I will be reading soon that I am excited about. And blog friends, of course :)

Have a great two weeks, Romi! Looking forward to chatting with you later!

    1. AAHHHHH! THANK YOU, AYLEE! I'm a very quiet person about my writing, re what it's actually about. I don't share much at all, in that regard! *laughs* But yes. I was focusing on another thing for a long time and this crept up and... got me, I guess.
Thank you! Your support is really just incredible and making me mush. You're so sweet.

Isn't is awesome? It was so strange for me to realise that and accept it enough to put in words. I feel like I might be letting people down by saying I'm not happy even necessarily half of the time. But that's me, at the same time, and I'm big on not lying to myself or halfing my truths.
Oh, that's brilliant! And very amusing, too. I'm so glad you have that element of pure happiness in your life as a constant, Aylee- just reading what you wrote shows me how very happy they make you.

Thank you, Aylee! Talk soon. xx

  4. I am extremely excited for your writing endeavours, and I hope everything pans out the way you want it to. I am absolutely in love with the little facts you gave about your manuscript, and I'll totally be reading WHEN (we are all for positive reinforcement when it comes to writing dreams, Romi) is it published! :D

I love your answers to the tag! And I cannot believe that I forgot to mention rain of some kind in mine. Rain is my favourite thing ever. Watching movies and reading and writing in the rain - perfection.

And of course looking through book collections is such a happy inducing activity. Which is why I totally want a library of my own one day. With a huge-ass chair that I can sit and read in (and also take surreptitious glances at my shelves).

I hoep your two week retreat is lovely! <3

    1. THANK YOU! I'm thrillingly excited and terrified and it's all intensely big and emotionally scary. I'll email you when I get back re: critique partnering, bcause maybe you could read this one...?
And yes for when. WHEN I AM PUBLISHED. It feels so grand to get that out. I'm just shy and unsure about putting when when it might be if. But no more.

Rain is glorious, isn't it? It's always had a huge part in my happiness and life. I was once a rain commanding royal of magic types, you know. It is true. And Thunder storms! Love them. If I can still read, that is.

Yes! Me too! I love your description of that chair. I think I'll have a chair and a day bed. And a really nice fire. But... fire in a library? I don't want to continue to Baudelaire lagacy.

  5. Have fun on your vacation Romi and good luck with your pitch. It is scary as... it's not two in the morning so I won't add a curse word. Good luck x2! ;)

    1. Thank you so much, Jordan! Here's hoping the competition ends up starting, since it hasn't and it was supposed to on the 29th. But agenting (or the idea of) is terrifying in a wonderful but still terrifying way.

  7. Ooh so exciting that you have made such progress on your novel! Good luck with the querying! The Pitch to Publication event sounds wonderful - it seems like it makes the process much easier. That beautiful view from your window should be plenty of inspiration to write (with the bonus I guess that it will be too cold to go outside!)

Have a great vacation, and I look forward to reading the updates you have planned! :)

    1. Thank you! It really is and I'm... very proud of myself. I just found out it is up and going, whereas I (and quite a few others, by the looks of the comments) couldn't get updates, but oh well. At least it's actually going and I've got two days left to enter!
Haha, yes! Although I'm comitting myself to taking Kasta for a walk/run along the beach every (not rainy) morning.

Thanks so much, Charlene! I can't wait to see what you've been up to when I get back. xx

Yes, they're so beautiful to just gaze at and think about all the stories just waiting. I've got hundreds of stories, many told but many as yet undiscovered, on my shelves. It's glorious.

Two weeks sounds like a lovely getaway and the perfect time in winter when you need a little pick me up. How exciting about your novel! And I'm so happy to see that the #MoreHappyThanNot chain is carrying on so well -- I was the one who tagged Chiara, actually, and it's such a fun tag. I love your list of items in there, especially about meeting new characters of your head (and of course torturing them, what would be the point otherwise?)

It's brilliant, isn't it? I'm so glad I found about the roots for who created it and was able to be a part, and continue to share it. It was so gorgeous and fun to do. Ahhah, totally. I love meeting a new character, but knowing the strains and stress I'll put over them, and the plot twists, it can be ludicrously fun. xx

Please note, however, that nothing hurtful will be tolerated.
